Ford 9-Inch
The strongest common rear axle, and the only one you can re-gear on a bench.
The 9-inch's trick is the removable third member: pinion, ring gear and carrier come out as one assembly. Change gears in an afternoon without lying under the car, and keep a spare ratio on the shelf for track weekends. The hypoid offset that makes it strong also makes it lose a little more power than a 12-bolt. Nobody who has broken a 12-bolt cares.
