The most swapped V8 ever built. 1955 to 2003, and still the default answer.
Gen I small block Chevrolet — 265, 283, 302, 305, 327, 350 and 400. Bellhousing pattern, motor mount spacing and intake flange stayed put for nearly fifty years, which is exactly why it ends up in everything from Tri-Fives to Model A's. What matters when you order: 1986 and earlier use a two-piece rear main seal, 1987 and later use one-piece. Vortec heads (1996+) take a different intake bolt pattern than everything before them. Get those two right and most SBC parts simply fit.
